Cyan did have approval over the storyline, and Myst co-creator Rand Miller returned in an acting role. They have Cyan's blessing, so hopefully someday they'll be able to complete a finished product.ģ) Myst III: Exile wasn't developed by Cyan themselves, but instead by Presto Studios (creators of the Journeyman Project series), and published by Ubisoft. Interesting note: there's a fan group working on a project called Starry Expanse [with the intent of recreating Riven in a real-time 3D environment, much as RealMyst did for the original Myst. The only version out there is the original 1997 release, gorgeous prerendered environments and all. Both RealMyst and its Masterpiece Edition feature a fairly short additional world that wasn't in the original Myst and serves as a tie-in to its sequel.Ģ) Riven is, well, Riven. RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a recent remake of RealMyst with more detailed models and high-res textures. RealMyst was released in 2000 and is a remake of the original game into a real-time 3D environment. The original 1993 version of the game that sold millions of CD-ROM drives isn't available on any storefronts anymore, but Myst: Masterpiece Edition is basically a straight upgrade: it has the same prerendered environments at a higher resolution. Myst V makes no sense without having played through some incarnation of Uru, and it's set afterwards chronologically.Īnyway, here's a few clarifications about some of the different editions out there:ġ) Myst has had a few different releases over the years.
